How we can prevent more burglaries in St Albans district “Burglary and vehicle crime remains high in the St Albans district, but the majority of it is preventable” – that’s the message from St Albans Detective Inspector Sol Beere. The number of residential burglaries across the county is currently around 10% higher than the same period last year with the St Albans district having the most offences – with 143 burglaries since 1 April, 2025. “We continue to pursue and detect burglars – but it would be preferable, if together, we prevented them from happening in the first place.” He continued: “We know, from speaking to convicted burglars that they will opt for the path of least resistance and an easy opportunity. The best way to deter burglars is by making sure all doors and windows are locked and ensure any PVCu doors are locked properly by lifting the handle and using the key to double-lock them. Also consider installing a doorbell camera, internal camera and/or monitored burglar alarm.” DI Beere’s team, working with other departments across the force, continue to enforce Operation Guardian plans, which includes extra high-visibility patrols and road checks to disrupt criminals using main roads into St Albans., Harpenden and London Colney. They are also making use of mobile and static ANPR cameras across the area. Criminals will not know where they are and they could be stopped anywhere, at any time. Covert patrols will also be deployed on daily basis. He added: “There are no current hotspots, so it is vital that residents make their homes are uninviting as possible.” The district is also experiencing a rise in the theft of motor vehicles. DI Beere said: “Generally, if a car is locked opportunist thieves won’t force entry unless they are looking for tools. If you are not able to empty your vehicle or park in a garage, try and park with the rear doors right up against a garage or near a lamppost. “Drivers with keyless cars should also consider investing in faraday bags.” He added: “If you believe a burglary is in progress, please call us on 999. We would rather turn up to a well-meaning call than miss an opportunity to catch a burglar or car thief in the act.” You can also report information retrospectively online at herts.police.uk/report, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat at herts.police.uk/contact or call the non-emergency number 101.
